April is Autism Awareness Month. Autism is a neurological disorder that affects 1 in 110 children nationally. Locally in New Jersey it is 1 in 94 children. The cause could be environmental, genetic, or the most likely cause could be the mercury in the vaccines.More research has to be done to pin point the exact cause and it has to be done quickly to stop this epidemic. There is more information to be found on Autism at the library and on the Internet. Stop at the library and look for the display table for free information concerning Autism.

PECS Basic Training

At the PECS Basic Training you will learn how to appropriately implement the six phases of the PECS protocol, including teaching initiation, attributes, commenting and much more. This course offers 1.3 ASHA CEUs or 7.0 BACB CEUs at no additional cost! All participants will leave with practical knowledge that can immediately be implemented into any setting.

This intensive two-day training is designed to teach participants to appropriately implement the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It begins with an overview of the Pyramid Approach to Education to explore the key components of designing effective educational environments. Participants will then learn how to implement the six phases of PECS, including attributes, through presenter demonstrations, video examples and role-play opportunities. Participants will leave the workshop with a fundamental and practical understanding of how to implement PECS and the Pyramid Approach to Education. Don't wait -- it's time to picture your learners communicating!

Sprout Film Festival

The Sprout Film Festival is proud to provide innovative programming in the field of developmental disabilities. The festival will be taking place April 30th, 2010 - May 2nd, 2010 at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.

Films focus on a variety of subjects and are from all over the world. By presenting films of artistry and intellect, the festival hopes to reinforce accurate portrayals of people with developmental disabilities and expose the general public to important issues facing this population. The goal is an enjoyable and enlightening experience that will help breakdown stereotypes, promoting a greater acceptance of differences and awareness of similarities.

32 films will screened throughout the weekend including The Horse Boy, Clay Marzo:Just Add Water and Billy the Kid which focus on Autism.

Adjacent to the two screening rooms we will have an exhibit of 25 photographs by Mary Ellen Mark from her book, Extraordinary Child.
